SUMMARY:CIICA CONVERSATION: Experiences of Tinnitus and CI
DESCRIPTION:Although most forms of ear and hearing problems can be effectively managed with modern technology\, tinnitus remains an invisible unaddressed burden to many. \nIn this CIICA conversation\, led by Robert Mandara (Vice-President\, EURO-CIU)\, we would like to hear and discuss your thoughts and experiences on all aspects of tinnitus in relation to CI. For example: \n\nWhat are your experiences?\nDo cochlear implants improve or worsen tinnitus? What concrete or anecdotal evidence is there?\nWhat do CI users find helps or worsens their tinnitus?\nAre clinics asking about and taking tinnitus seriously?\n\nPlease register and join this conversation if you are\, for example\, a tinnitus sufferer\, CI user\, a parent of a CI user\, or a professional working in the CI and/or tinnitus field. Places are strictly limited\, with no space for spectators in this short\, one hour discussion! We hope that every participant will contribute to the conversation and have their say about this important topic. Live captioning will be provided in English and other languages by request. \nWednesday September 14th 2022 \n19:00 UK\n20:00 CET\n1400 EST\n11:00 PST \nThursday 15 Sep \n04:00 AEDT\n06:00 NZ \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:HHC Webinar: What's Your Hearing Number?
DESCRIPTION:HHC Webinar: What’s Your Hearing Number?\nA new approach to educating the public about hearing health presented by Molly Sheehan from the Johns Hopkins Cochlear Centre for Hearing and Public Health. \nMolly Sheehan joined the Johns Hopkins Cochlear Center in Spring 2020 to organize and expand its communications efforts and by Fall had turned the part-time role into a full-time effort. \nShe draws on her years of experience in healthcare communications at Ketchum’s Washington\, DC office\, and subsequent work as director of communications for the nonprofit National Aquarium in Baltimore to amplify the Cochlear Center’s research\, education\, and policy efforts. Her 20+ years in communications may be around diverse topics\, but it has all hinged around the same vital core of good storytelling. Molly’s interest is in mining the Cochlear Center for compelling stories about its research and policy advocacy work\, and telling those stories in ways that are relevant and timely. \n8 September 2022 \n5pm PDT\, 6pm MDT\, 7pm EDT \nClick the buttons below to add this event to your calendar: \nGoogle CalendariCalendarClick here to join the meeting

SUMMARY:Bone Conduction Solutions for Hearing Loss Secondary to Chronic Otitis Media: Case Studies for Audiologists
DESCRIPTION:Chronic Otitis Media (COM) may contribute more than half of the global burden of hearing loss but there is no global consensus on diagnostic and treatment guidelines for hearing loss due to the disease. \nResearch suggests that bone conduction may be an effective and patient-preferred alternative to treating COM-related hearing loss versus hearing aids for many patients\, providing consistent and reliable access to sound regardless of the disease cycle. \nThis course will focus on case studies presented by audiologists actively fitting bone conduction solutions. \nRegister Now

SUMMARY:The path to establishing Adiposity-Based Chronic Disease (ABCD): What hearing health may learn from endocrinology
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Jeffrey I. Mechanick\, MD \nDr Mechanick is Clinical Professor of Medicine\, Endocrinology\, Diabetes and Bone Disease at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and Director of Metabolic Support\, The Mount Sinai Hospital. \nRegister NowSimilar to the recent Delphi Consensus on the treatment of moderate to profound sensorineural hearing loss in adults\, as a direct output of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) and the American College of Endocrinology (ACE) 2014 Consensus Conference on Obesity\, a group of professionals in endocrinology spearheaded the effort to overcome the barriers to treating. \nIn 2012\, AACE first declared obesity as a disease state\, an assessment officially adopted by the American Medical Association in 2014. The new term – Adiposity-Based Chronic Disease or ABCD – focuses on the characteristic pathophysiological effects of excess weight\, rather than the weight itself\, and offers medical professionals standardized protocols for weight loss and treatments for obesity-related conditions. \nRedefining obesity to address the negative impact on health outcomes reduced general confusion and also the stigma associated with obesity leading to improvements in screening and access to appropriate treatment.

SUMMARY:Adult Hearing Screening
DESCRIPTION:Presented by Jennifer Deal\, PhD epidemiologist and gerontologist with expertise in cognitive aging. \nDr. Deal is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. \nRegister NowGood hearing and communication are important to all stages of life. The number of people living with disabling hearing loss continues to grow in the United States especially among the adult population. If left unaddressed or under addressed\, hearing loss poses significant challenges to healthy aging. \nThe Hearing Health Collaborative was formed to understand the underlying barriers and define a plan to overcome challenges to access. Specifically\, we explore 1) awareness of the science behind healthy hearing and healthy aging 2) current guidance and policies to support access to the full continuum of treatment solutions and 3) adequacy of care delivery models to support an increasing number of patients.

Associate Research Professor of Global Health. My research focuses on reducing hearing health disparities globally. I work with colleagues around the world to define the global burden of hearing loss and deepen our understanding of its social\, economic\, and health impact. We apply a public health approach that spans prevention\, diagnosis\, and treatment. \nFundamental to prevention is evaluating why hearing loss is so much more common in low-resource settings and investigating risk factors that are potentially modifiable. I have focused my prevention efforts on undernutrition\, evaluating the contribution of early life malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies to risk of hearing loss in Nepal. We are currently expanding this work to the Bolivian Amazon. \nDiagnosis of hearing loss in remote settings brings unique challenges\, including scarcity of audiologists and otolaryngologists\, need for portable equipment\, and lack of screening programs to identify affected children. I am currently leading a PCORI (Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute)-funded community randomized trial with the Norton Sound Health Corporation in Nome\, Alaska to evaluate a new protocol for school hearing screening in 15 villages on the Bering Sea.  This study utilizes mobile health technology and telemedicine referral to identify previously undiagnosed hearing loss and efficiently connect Alaska Native children to care. The intervention has applicability across the state of Alaska\, as well as in other remote\, low-resource settings with a high prevalence of hearing loss and ear disease. \nMy research on treatment of hearing loss is focused on expanding access to cochlear implantation\, a treatment for severe-to-profound hearing loss traditionally limited to high-resource settings. I have worked with collaborators in 14 countries to demonstrate that cochlear implantation can be a cost-effective treatment option in Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. We are expanding these studies to other regions of the world. \nRead MoreRead LessCarrie L. Nieman\, MD\, MPH \nCarrie L. SUMMARY:CI Futures Forum: Best Practice Clinical Pathway for Diagnosis
DESCRIPTION:Screening for hearing loss in adults is important for the identification of  potential candidates for cochlear implantation. Clearer and appropriate criteria for diagnosis of those who may be a candidate for cochlear implants  will help create a clear pathway to implantation and improve understanding of the benefits and appropriateness of CIs by health professionals and the general public. The guidelines and evidence are clear that older age should be no barrier to cochlear implantation.** \nThis webinar will feature presentations from a diverse multi disciplinary panel of experts. The panel will present real world examples from their own perspective and experience as well as discussing  the recommendations from the Consensus paper.  These webinars are open to all hearing health professionals\, cochlear implant teams\, cochlear implant users\, advocacy groups and commissioners of health care. \nWatch the PresentationsChair: Michal Luntz\nMichal Luntz\, MD\, is an Otologist\, the director of the Ear and Hearing Center at A.R.M Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery\, Assuta MC\, Tel Aviv. SUMMARY:CI Futures Forum: Awareness of Cochlear Implantation
DESCRIPTION:In every country access to cochlear implantation (CI) for adults with severe or profound hearing loss is low. Globally\, it is estimated that only one in twenty who could benefit  from cochlear implants have one. Most other health treatments have internationally accepted standards of care that inform patients and health care practitioners about when specialist referrals and treatment options should be considered. This is a gap in the field of adult cochlear implantation that is addressed by a new publication titled “International Consensus Paper on Adult Cochlear Implantation”.  \nLack of referral pathways to CI leads to a substantial unnecessary burden to the individual with hearing loss\, with a poorer quality of life. We know that a lack of referral and awareness of the benefits of cochlear implantation are the major reasons for under-identification of the many who could benefit. Estimates suggest that in many countries only 5-10% of potential candidates are implanted . More awareness in primary health care and audiology of the benefits of CIs needs to be promoted to improve access. More knowledge among health professionals about Standards of Care and best practices in CI diagnosis\, earlier referral\, treatment and aftercare will help many people live healthier and more fulfilled lives. ** \nThis webinar will explore the various barriers and facilitators to overcoming  awareness of CI from a diverse multi disciplinary panel of experts. The panel will present real world examples from their own perspective and experience as well as discussing potential solutions to increasing equity and access for adults. \nWatch the RecordingsChair: Brian Kaplan (Maryland)\nBrian Kaplan\, M.D.  F.A.C.S.\, is Chair of the Department of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Greater Baltimore Medical Center and Director of the Cochlear Implant Program at Greater Baltimore Medical Center. Carlson (US) \nMayo Clinic Consultant\, Department of Otorhinolaryngology\, Mayo Clinic\, Rochester\, Minnesota \nMatthew L. Carlson\, M.D.\, is an ear surgeon who specializes in treating diseases of the middle ear\, temporal bone and skull base. His primary research interests include clinical outcomes in cochlear implantation and acoustic neuroma tumors (vestibular schwannoma). \nOne area of particular interest is cochlear implantation surgery for patients with varying degrees of residual hearing. Traditionally\, only patients with complete hearing loss in both ears were approved for cochlear implantation. Over the years\, clinical outcomes with cochlear implantation have steadily improved\, allowing more patients to benefit from this technology. As a result of ongoing clinical studies by Dr. Carlson and colleagues\, additional indications such as hearing loss in only one ear and implantation in patients with less severe hearing loss will very likely become commonplace. \nDr. Carlson is also interested in quality of life outcome analysis for patients with vestibular schwannoma tumors. Treatment of these tumors is highly controversial. To date\, most studies comparing treatment modalities including surgery\, radiation and observation have compared measures such as hearing loss\, facial nerve function and tumor control. In order to analyze outcomes beyond this narrow scope of data\, Dr. Carlson uses quality-of-life measures to better understand patient-perceived outcomes in an effort to further refine treatment methods. \nRead MoreShow LessAllison Biever (US) \nAudiologist\, Rocky Mountain Ear Center\, Colorado \nDr. Allison Biever received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Alberta in 1989 and her master’s degree in Audiology at the University of Colorado in 1992\, after which time she worked as a fellow in the first cochlear implant program in Colorado.
