The Cochlear Implant Living Guidelines outline best practices across the hearing care pathway, from early identification of hearing loss and referral through to long-term support after cochlear implantation. The guidelines were developed by an international task force that included multi-disciplinary experts across hearing research, hearing health care, otolaryngology, public policy as well as those with lived experience of hearing loss.
Key Recommendations:
- Offer hearing screening for adults beginning at age 50.
- For adults with suspected or confirmed hearing loss, primary care providers should assess for reversible causes and refer to a hearing specialist when further evaluation is indicated.
- Refer adults for a cochlear implant evaluation when they meet the 60/60 referral criteria.
